European Court of Justice: Malta's "golden passport" scheme is contrary to EU laws

Malta's "golden passport" scheme, which allows people to become citizens and holders of Maltese passports through financial investments, is in violation of European laws.
This is what the European Court of Justice has decided, reports "BBC".
The European Union Commission took Malta to court in 2022 over this scheme, which allows foreigners to become citizens and holders of Maltese passports, in exchange for a payment of 600 thousand euros, by buying or renting property of a certain value and donating 10 thousand euros to charity.
With a Maltese passport they can live and work in any EU country.
The EU Court of Justice said the scheme "turns the acquisition of citizenship into a simple commercial transaction".
The Maltese government has yet to respond to the decision, with former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat calling it "political".
He said he believes the scheme can continue with “some changes.” Malta risks heavy fines if it does not comply with the court’s ruling.
