Terrible crime/ How father and son killed their neighbors. They used the nails and symbols they left behind

A father and son who killed and maimed two men with a torch and drove nails into the eyes of one of their victims have been jailed for at least 34 years. Ian MacLeod, 66, and Dean MacLeod, 42, killed Derek Johnston, 37, and Desmond Rowlings, 66, at a flat in Edinburgh in 2022.
The city's High Court was told a hammer was left embedded in Johnston's head and the letters 'YLT' were burned into his forehead with a lighter. The killers cut off an ear and part of his nose and put nails in his eyes. Johnston suffered at least 28 separate injuries to his head, neck and limbs. His body was found in the bathroom covered with a rug.
Rowlings also had "VT", "YT" and "YLT" burned into his body. The killers cut off parts of his nose and upper lip and cut off his ears. Rowlings had 136 distinct injuries to her head, neck, chest, back and limbs. The court was told that some of these were clusters of injuries, so the total number inflicted was significantly higher.
His body was found in the living room covered with a blanket. During the search of the apartment, the police found two blood-stained machetes, a Stanley knife and two hammers. Judge Lord Arthurson declared: "This is, on any account, one of the worst murder cases to come before the high court." The murders took place at the flat between October 30 and November 1, 2022. The court heard that Johnston arrived at the flat at around 6.15pm on October 30, while neighbor Mr. Rowlings was invited on October 31.
The alarm was raised about Rowlings disappearance after his partner tried to wish him a happy birthday the following day. Dean MacLeod, nicknamed Denim, is said to have bought two hammers, forensic suits, plastic shoes and glasses before the murders. After the fatal attacks, the MacLeods fled the scene and consumed methadone.
The pair eventually ended up at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, where police recovered body parts belonging to each of the victims from a rucksack in their possession. On Monday, MacLeods pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 34 years behind bars before being eligible for parole. The court heard that Ian MacLeod has a number of health problems, including Parkinson's disease, while Dean MacLeod has suffered mental health problems for several years, writes Sky News.
After the murders, police found a note in the flat said to have been written by Dean MacLeod which read: "What we did was evil and sadistic, but I've been begging for help for decades." Dean MacLeod is said to have told a psychiatrist that his father was a "narcissist and sociopath", adding: "The voice in my head is telling me to do this and do that".
