An exclusive Axios report by author Marc Caputo says that the administration of US President Donald Trump is significantly intensifying economic and political pressure on Cuba, in a strategy aimed at gradually weakening the government in Havana and preparing for possible collapse scenarios.
According to sources cited by Axios, senior US officials are also analyzing military contingency plans in the event of internal destabilization on the island, although no military intervention has been authorized and an invasion is not considered imminent.
The report emphasizes that the current policy is based on what one official called "accelerationism" - increasing economic and diplomatic pressure to accelerate internal changes in Cuba, without direct military intervention.
According to US administration sources, the strategy aims to gradually exhaust the Cuban regime's economic capacities through sanctions and financial isolation, particularly targeting economic networks linked to the Cuban military.
At the center of this policy is also mentioned US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who, according to the report, has played a key role in drafting and communicating measures against the economic structures of the Cuban state.
Axios also reports that the US has increased secondary sanctions on foreign companies that cooperate with economic entities linked to the Cuban state, causing several international operators to withdraw from the island's market.
Strategically, the US administration is also linking policy towards Cuba to developments in the region, including tensions with Venezuela and Iran, aiming for a broader reconfiguration of geopolitical influence in Latin America.
However, according to the same report, there are also clear differences within the administration: some officials warn that any attempt at direct intervention could create a prolonged and uncontrollable crisis.
Despite this, the main line remains continuous economic pressure, with the aim - according to the cited sources - of creating the conditions for a possible political transition in Cuba.
