Three years of attacks on Basha as "the Americans' man", now Berisha uses the DP as an ATM to gain favor with the US

For three years, the rhetoric of Foltores and its supporters towards Lulzim Basha has been brutal and unrelenting: they have accused him of being "the Americans' man", of being sold out to Washington, of being a politician with close ties to American diplomats and who, according to them, had deviated from the "will of the sovereign".
They have even gone further, publicly declaring that “America does not bring us to power” and that “we do not need America.” With this anti-Western spirit, Berisha led the Democratic Party towards the deepest division and isolation in its history.
Ironically, today, after all this war, the same group that used the banner of anti-Americanism to divide the opposition is trying at all costs to return to America's attention. And not just with words: they pay 6 million euros for lobbying in Washington, just to have the opportunity to be seen in the eyes of US representatives.
This is a frightening contradiction, which clearly shows the deep political and moral crisis the Democratic Party has entered under the current leadership of Sali Berisha.
If Basha's ties with international partners were natural, built on Western principles and values, today it is claimed to buy the attention of the US with money.
For what? Not for the future of the DP, but to save Berisha, who initially declared that he would not use the DP for his personal troubles, while today he uses it as an ATM for his problems with the US and justice.
The expensive lobbying deal is being sold to Democrats and Albanians as a "salvation" for the opposition.
This is a false thesis that attempts to mask Berisha's personal predicament. Because without his fight against the Democratic Party and Lulzim Basha – which began after the "non grata" declaration – the DP and the opposition would not only be contenders for power today, but would be in power.
Basha has enjoyed and enjoys the respect of the US without having to spend staggering amounts of money, like what Berisha is spending today. If Berisha had taken a step back in September 2021, with the clear support of the US and with corruption in every branch of the Rama government, Albania would have a different story today.
But the blindness of personal interest turned Berisha into a tool of Edi Rama, who used his plight to attack Basha as the real alternative to his power.
Today Berisha is trying to buy with money what the DP had for free: international respect and support. But, even though the amount is staggering, it cannot buy back lost time and cannot erase the damage done to Albanians and democrats who were used as cannon fodder in a personal battle./ Alfapress.al
