WTO: Global trade does not depend entirely on the US

US President Donald Trump's tariff policy is a wake-up call for Europe and the world, World Trade Organization (WTO) official Ralph Ossa said, insisting that global trade does not depend entirely on Washington.

"As important as the United States is, it only accounts for 13 percent of global imports. That means 87 percent of imports go to the rest of the world," Ossa pointed out.

"Of course we want to export to America, but it is important that the rest of the world also stays united," added Ossa, the WTO's chief economist.

According to Ossa, trade levels have already fallen significantly in North America since Trump returned to power. "You can already see big effects there," he stressed.

Ossa stressed the need to respond to trade diversion, noting that China could divert exports previously to the United States to Europe.

"I think it is essential that these diversionary effects are managed in a cooperative manner, so that this conflict does not escalate further," he stressed.

The WTO expects Chinese exports to Europe to grow by 6% this year, as goods from China are currently subject to tariffs of more than 100% in the United States.
