Albania, the second in Europe for the rapid recovery of tourism, compared to

Serbia and Albania are the two countries that have recorded the fastest recovery of tourism, compared to before the pandemic crisis, according to Eurostat data, which has published online the stays in tourist accommodation for the countries of Europe for 2022.

Serbia ranks first in Europe, which has recorded an increase in net stays by 21.8% compared to 2019, before the pandemic began, which dealt a heavy blow to this sector.

Albania ranks second. According to Eurostat, a total of 3.8 million nights of stays in tourist accommodation were recorded in Albania in 2022, with an increase of 17.6% compared to 2019. While compared to 2021, the increase in net stays in Albania is about 20%.

In Europe, there are only 6 countries that saw an increase compared to before the pandemic (Serbia, Albania, Denmark, Iceland, the Netherlands, Norway, Belgium). In the region, Montenegro was still 7.8% of pre-crisis levels and North Macedonia with the most negative performance, with -20.7% (data for Kosovo and Bosnia are not yet complete).

Denmark was the only EU member to record an increase in international tourist overnights (+4%), while Croatia (-2%) and Luxembourg (-3%) approached 2019 levels.

On the other hand, Malta recorded the highest increase in overnight stays by domestic tourists (+39% in 2022 compared to 2019), followed by Cyprus (+35%) and Slovenia (+25%).

The biggest declines in nights spent by domestic tourists were recorded in Slovakia (-22%), Romania (-15%) and Hungary (-13%), which also recorded fairly large decreases in nights spent by international tourists (at least -30%)./ Monitor
