Bank payments are added, the card replaces cash in hand

Albanian bank payments have increased this year. The data of the Central Bank show that in the first half of the year, the number of purchases or transfers reached 18.7 mln. The increase compared to last year is 18%.

The bank points out that together with payments, the total value of transactions has also increased. It reached 2.9 trillion ALL, an increase of 8% compared to the first 6 months of 2022.

Card payments take the main weight among the alternative actions that replace the lek, with about 60% of the total. Card operations are still dominated by cash withdrawals from ATMs, while payments at POS terminals are becoming more widespread.

The most important innovation of this year is that bank transfers are now being dominated by actions in electronic channels. About 56% of the total number of these transfers were made in non-paper form, through electronic channels.

According to the most recent estimates of the Bank of Albania, the number of adults who own a bank account has reached 66% of the total. This shows that the use of banking services has marked a significant increase in recent years.
