Why are men taller than women?!

To explain why men are on average taller than women, scientists theorized about competition for mates.

But the effects of estrogen on bone growth may be a sufficient answer.

One of the most obvious physical differences between men and women is their average size.

Men are, in general, taller. The standard textbook explanation, sexual selection and male competition, goes all the way back to Charles Darwin:

There can be little doubt that the greater size and strength of the man, as compared with the woman, together with his broader shoulders, are his muscles more developed, his rough outline of body, his courage and severity more great have been preserved or even increased during the long savagery of man, by the success of the strongest and bravest men, both in the general struggle for life and in their contests for women.

Essentially, if it weren't for men's fierce physical struggle for access to mates, all humans would apparently be equal.

Evolutionary psychology extends that argument to say that these biological directives underlie our behaviors, men can't help but be aggressive and competitive.

"There's a lot of importance given to our differences in body size, as if that's the fundamental sex difference," said Holly Dunsworth, a biological anthropologist at the University of Rhode Island.
