The red Easter egg and its symbolism

The Easter holiday is symbolized by the red Easter Egg and Easter Bread.

The red Easter egg is the main symbol of this holiday that symbolizes life. The Easter egg is as old as Christianity, so the Church has accepted it as a symbol of the Resurrection of Christ.

But why exactly an egg?

The egg symbolizes life, which is enclosed and dormant within its shell, which comes to light the moment it breaks.

The red color of the eggs symbolizes sacrifice and in this case, it symbolizes the sacrifice of Christ, a symbol of victory, joy, and life.

Thus the eggshell symbolizes the tomb of Christ, which was opened and gave life.

There is also a Church legend about the red egg: When Mary Magdalene, after the resurrection of Christ, went to Pilate to inform him of the event and brought him a basket of white eggs as a gift, according to the custom of the time, he said to her: As long as the eggs you brought can turn red, so long can Christ be resurrected.

And surprisingly, the eggs immediately turned red.

Based on ancient traditions, in the imaginations of many peoples, the egg symbolizes the beginning and source of life.

Based on the myths of the Egyptians, Indians, Babylonians, Greeks, and Chinese, the universe is born and develops from an egg.

In Bulgarian culture, there are many traces of imagery related to the egg. In some of their texts, the sun is defined as a divine egg, in others, time is the hen and the eggs are the stars, which are made from it.

In popular beliefs and traditions, the egg possesses magical power. But the most well-known symbolism is that of the Easter Egg, which breaks evil spells.

According to tradition, eggs are dyed on Maundy Thursday by the oldest member of the family.

Before dyeing, the woman of the house lights a candle and makes a cross with the words: God willing, we will again wait for the red egg!

The first egg is necessarily dyed red and the lips of children and young brides are smeared with it, so that they will be healthy, beautiful, and protected from the "evil eye." The red Easter egg is placed in every home to bring health and well-being.

The first meal begins with it, the first time a red egg is eaten after the long fast.

But in the Christian tradition, especially in recent years, the egg is seen not only in red, but also in other colors. The use of other colors symbolizes the colors of spring and sunlight.

Painting them in many colors is preferred by Catholic Christians, while Orthodox Christians are fanatical about this process of painting eggs. For them, the essence of symbolism lies in the color red.

In addition to the egg, there is also Easter Bread, which is cooked and eaten on this holiday.

In the Easter Bread, the red egg placed in the middle stands out, symbolizing sweetness and happiness, also found in the words of God and the prayers of believers.
