On the run for 30 years, Cosa Nostra boss Matteo Mesina Denaro dies in prison

Matteo Messina Denaro is dead. The boss of Cosa Nostra was 61 years old and had been suffering from colon cancer for some time. The former super fugitive was admitted to the prisoner ward of the L'Aquila hospital, where he ended up in an irreversible coma.
Doctors had suspended feeding him after his condition worsened on Thursday due to bleeding and collapse, with his vital signs impaired. At his bedside were his niece and lawyer Lorenza Guttadauria and his young daughter Lorenza, only recently known and having met for the first time in the maximum security prison in L'Aquila in April.
He was in an irreversible coma, in the hospital under the "41 bis" regime after his arrest in Palermo last January as he had asked not to be resuscitated.
The Cosa Nostra boss had spent 30 years on the run, but on January 16 he was arrested by the Italian police, Corriere reports.
"You took me because I'm sick, I'll never regret it", were some of his first sentences he said to the investigators.
A few days ago, he declared in the media that he reconciled with his daughter, Lorenza Alagna, and gave her his last name, where the latter signed the notarial deed.
