Who Really Discovered America?

Pop culture dictates that Christopher Columbus was the first European to discover North America.

This has been presented as fact until recently but ancient documents dictate that it was the Vikings and more specifically the Viking Leif Erikson who actually discovered America first.

Leif Erikson was the son of Erik Red, the first founder of a settlement in Greenland and also a distant relative of Naddodd, another explorer who was the first to discover Iceland.

So we can say that exportation was a trait inherited from Lief Erikson. After growing up in Greenland, at the age of 29 he decided to follow in the footsteps of his ancestors.

He first heard of the land in West Greenland from a man named Bjarni Herjolfsson, a merchant who on his way back saw the land.

With this information, Erikson bought Bjarni's ship, gathered about thirty-five men, and set out for the place Bjarni had described.

His father had intended to go on expeditions with him, but he fell from his horse on the way to the ship, which he perceived as a bad omen, so he stayed home.

A Wild Ride

Alone without expert help and without much experience, Erikson continues to follow the path of the trader.

It would first land in a northern part of Canada, which modern estimates assume was in the country of Labrador in Canada.

He would set off again and after 2 days would arrive in a much warmer part of the continent with an abundant supply of coastal salmon, which is interpreted as the coastal area of North America.

Winter approached, so Erikson decided to set up camp for the rest of the year in this newly found area. He split his crew into two halves, one to stay in camp and the other half to explore.

The party of explorers during the excavation found many grape vines as they reached further inland, therefore, christened the land with the name "Vinland".

He would spend the winter there and return to Greenland with an abundant supply of grapes and wood to show his success./Prepared by Alfapress.al
