A first-generation iPhone is going up for auction for more than $50,000
An unlocked first-generation iPhone will be offered at an auction in the US today and is expected to sell for more than $50,000, the Guardian reported today.
The phone was manufactured in 2007, has a two-megapixel camera and eight gigabytes of storage space.
Tattoo artist Karen Green received the phone as a gift from her new employer in 2007, but as she already had a new mobile she left it on the shelf unopened, according to the Guardian.
After hearing in October that another unlocked first-generation iPhone from 2007 had sold at auction for nearly $40,000, she contacted LCG Auctions, which was handling the sale at the time.
"We got calls from a lot of people, but about 99 percent of them didn't have the right thing. However, Karen truly possesses a unique specimen,” said LCG Auction founder Mark Montero.
Green said he decided to sell the iPhone at this time to raise money to open a new tattoo studio in New Jersey.
LCG Auctions valued Green's iPhone at "more than $50,000." The auction opens today and ends on February 19.
