SPAK launches investigation into the entire escort corps, Veliaj's phone

The wiretapping of Erjon Veliaj while he was talking to his wife from the van of Durres Prison, brought two SPAK prosecutors to their feet, as they suspected that Veliaj was using a telephone in prison.

But when they verified the number that had accidentally been intercepted by SPAK (since Ajola Xoxa's number was intercepted), they realized that it was a number used by a prison police officer.

Prosecutors urgently obtained the daily duty list of this police officer and determined that on the day and time when the phone call was made to Ajola Xoxa's number, this police officer was on duty in the escort unit that transported Veliaj in a van from the Durrës detention center to the Special Court of Appeal in Tirana.

The police officer was immediately ordered to be escorted to the SPAK premises. During questioning, he admitted to prosecutors that the number was his and that he had given it to Veliaj inside the van, after he had asked him to speak to his wife.

"...I gave it to him willingly and without any promise or favoritism, after he asked me to speak to his wife. I felt sorry for him and gave it to him. I am old and will soon retire. I did not think it was a serious violation..." - said police officer M.

Because of this cooperative testimony, prosecutors tolerated the prison police officer on the verge of retirement, not arresting him on charges of "Abuse of Office."

Meanwhile, the other 5 members of the escort group, as well as the group's commander, citizen Gëzim, were questioned inside the SPAK building.

All members, including the driver of the van that transported Veliaj to the Court of Appeals, have been placed under investigation by SPAK on charges of "Failure to report a crime."

This is because, according to SPAK, they were inside the van and saw and heard that Veliaj was talking on the phone and did not take any measures to prevent or stop him.

The illegal actions of Veliaj and their colleague M, who gave him the phone, SPAK says were not reported to the relevant bodies by the other 5 prison police employees, who are charged with "Failure to report a crime".

Meanwhile, Veliaj has been charged with "Introducing or keeping prohibited items in the institution for the execution of prison sentences", an offense that provides for a sentence of 1 to 3 years in prison.
