The EU starts work on the project of two railways in Albania

The European Union announced that it has started, through the Western Balkans Investment Framework, the work to prepare the project for the two Albanian railway segments, part of the Eighth Corridor. The total value of the investment for the construction of the two lines is 2 billion euros, of which 418 million will be invested in the railway line that passes through Albanian territory.
The first segment of this railway in Albania has a stretch of 33.5 km from Durrës to Rrogozhinë and is estimated to have a cost of 62 million euros. While the second segment stretches 120.3 km from Rrogozhina to the border with North Macedonia and has a cost of 356 million euros.
Just a few days ago, the Albanian Railways opened the tender with a limited fund of 450 thousand euros, for the design of the electrification of the line from Durrës to the border with North Macedonia, and the deadline for accepting offers is June 3, 2024.
North Macedonia and Albania are upgrading existing lines and building missing links along the corridor, with the aim of shortening physical distances and moving more passengers and goods through sustainable modes of transport. With the support of the European Commission, these investments are being accompanied by reform measures to improve the competitiveness of the railway sector.
The eastern stretch of Corridor VIII, which connects North Macedonia with Bulgaria, is part of the Trans-European Transport Network and is the main project of the Global Gateway of the European Union. The Global Gateway Strategy connects countries and regions around the world by encouraging public and private investment in a global network of transport and supply chains, green energy, modern telecommunications, education and research.
Corridor VIII is one of the pan-European corridors, which includes both road and rail infrastructure, and is designed to facilitate the exchange of goods and passengers between the EU countries, the Balkan states that have access to the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea . It starts from the Italian ports of Bari and Brindisi, to the ports of Durrës and Vlora and then continues towards Elbasan, Skopje and Sofia, arriving at the ports of Burgas and Varna on the Black Sea./ Kapitali.al
