Environmental expert raises alarm: Waste burning causes genetic and carcinogenic diseases

Environmental expert, Ahmet Mehmeti from the waste field in Elbasan, where since yesterday waste has been burning causing an extraordinary situation, has spoken about the importance of proper treatment of urban waste.
According to him, the treatment of urban waste has started backwards and has not been based on recycling, which determines how its treatment should be developed.
Mehmeti emphasizes that incineration should be the last point of the strategy, and that Albania does not need 2, 3 or 4 incinerators, but just one is enough to treat the country's urban waste.
According to the expert, the risks of this situation are great for human health, including risks to the skin, blood, digestive system and heart. Pollution causes genetic diseases and carcinogens.
" With the construction of the incinerator here in Elbasan, immediately we as civil society, I am the president of the Elbasan Ecological Club, one of the most active associations in the Central Albania region, but also in Albania, we have always tried to express our opinion in meetings with government officials and the Ministry of Environment regarding the treatment of urban waste, especially solid waste.
So, the treatment of urban waste has been started backwards, recycling has not been put at its base. The word recycling determines how the entire development of urban waste treatment will develop.
They are a mineral wealth, it is a wealth that if used rationally, you profit from it, alleviate poverty, keep the environment clean, develop the economy.
This incineration, which should have been the last point of this strategy, in Albania there is no need to have 2, 3, 4 incinerators, just one incinerator is enough to treat Albania's urban waste.
The one that was built in Elbasan is a phony that has represented the name incinerator, it has been abused with that crazy creature that never got to work, that did not do the planned work.
It has been abused, I mean abusive planning, not a mistake. It has not given results, it has not produced energy, it has not used what was needed to treat it.
The risks are in all tissues of the body, from the risks in the skin, in the blood, in the digestive system, in the heart. This pollution is the cause of genetic diseases, of cancerous diseases.
So, there are all the evils that come from not maintaining a clean environment, that is, with the poor management of urban waste treatment.
That's why I insist that it should be recycling and not incineration.
Waste should be recycled, this is where the mistake is, this is where the evil is.
"So when you don't use this strategy for treating urban waste, what do you do then? Then you increase diseases, you increase the harm to the environment and you fail to keep the environment clean," the expert said on Syri TV.
