1 dead, over 120,000 homes without power from severe storms in Queensland, Australia

A woman was killed and more than 120,000 homes were left without power in Queensland, Australia after severe storms hit the state's southeast on Christmas Eve.
The woman in her 50s died in Helensvale, a Gold Coast suburb, after a tree fell on her as she walked along the road, according to local newspaper The Courier-Mail.
About 127,000 homes were without power at the height of the storms on the Gold Coast, Scenic Rim and Logan, the newspaper said.
Power could be out for days, if not longer, as crews from local power company Energex scrambled to repair 875 downed power lines after deadly storms hit south-east Queensland on Christmas Eve, destroying homes and trees.
New severe thunderstorm warnings were issued on Tuesday afternoon, with some suburbs of Brisbane braving golf ball-sized hail as South East Queensland continued to suffer from recent bouts of violent weather.
Australian broadcaster ABC News reported on Saturday that violent storms are likely to hit eastern Australia over the Christmas period this year due to unusual weather.
The spell of explosive storms would occur because polar air escaping Antarctica was expected to move directly over the southeastern states from Christmas Eve to Boxing Day, or Sunday to Tuesday, the report said.
