Cologne is alerted! Unexploded WWII bomb discovered, thousands evacuated

According to  local media,  it will explode in a controlled manner.

The explosive ordnance disposal service was only able to neutralize one of the bomb's two detonators.

Currently, sandbags are being brought to the site by trucks. To explode, the bomb must be covered with enough sand.

It is currently unclear when it might be implemented.

Hospitals in the vicinity of the unexploded bomb have already been evacuated and the evacuation of a third clinic began on Friday morning, a spokesman for the city of Cologne said.

It was already clear that the nursing home in Neubrück did not have to be evacuated, as it is outside the evacuation radius.

Residents within a radius of 500 meters of the site were forced to leave their homes around 9:30 am.

According to the city of Cologne, around 6,400 people have to leave their homes in Merheim. The city has set up a contact point at the school.

Two buses from the public transport company of Cologne have been made available.
