American Robert Francis Prevost was elected the new Pope of the Catholic Church, Donald Trump: Great honor for our country, I can't wait to meet him!

President Donald Trump has congratulated American Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost on his election as the new Pope of the Catholic Church, who will be otherwise known as "Pope Leo XIV."

"Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was just appointed Pope," Trump wrote, adding that his election is a great honor for America as he is the first American to be elected Pope.

"I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very significant moment,"  Trump said.
