Public transport tickets in Spain will increase, here's how much the monthly fee will be

The Spanish government will launch a national public transport ticket that will allow people to travel anywhere in the country on buses and trains for a fixed monthly fee of 60 euros.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez unveiled the initiative on Monday, saying it would come into effect in the second half of January and was intended to permanently change the way Spaniards understand and use public transport.
News of the approval came as Sánchez's minority coalition government struggles to survive a series of corruption and sexual harassment allegations that have engulfed his inner circle, his Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) and his administration.
Despite calls from his opponents to hold early general elections, Sánchez has vowed to continue governing, insisting that Spain is on the right track and that his government has the "energy and determination" to see the end of the current legislature in 2027.
The prime minister hailed the transport ticket as proof of his administration's commitment to improving the daily lives of Spaniards. He said the ticket, which will cost 30 euros a month for those under 26, would allow people to "travel anywhere in the country on medium-distance and suburban trains, as well as national bus services."
According to Sánchez, the scheme could help some workers cut their monthly travel costs by up to 60%. The Spanish scheme follows a similar initiative in Germany, which introduced a 49-euro monthly ticket covering regional rail, metro, tram and bus travel across the country in 2023.
In addition to announcing the scheme and defending his government's management of Spain's booming economy, Sánchez also spoke out about allegations of corruption and sexual harassment that have spread in recent weeks and months.
He said the government and his party had acted with "force and not silence" when faced with cases of suspected corruption, adding that they were committed to feminism and to combating sexual abuse and harassment.
