"Within 5 seconds, 60% of the supply disappeared!"/ Cyberattack ruled

Spanish electricity grid operator Red Eléctrica has ruled out the possibility that a cyberattack was the cause of the widespread power outage that hit Spain and Portugal, linking the incident to a problem in the production of energy from solar panels.

According to the company's official statement, no signs indicating cyberattacks, human error or unusual atmospheric phenomena have been found.

Red Eléctrica's operations director, Eduardo Prieto, stressed that two significant "disconnection" episodes have been recorded, which are likely to have occurred in the solar panel energy production sector.

Data shows that at the time of the outage, photovoltaic energy accounted for approximately 59% of the country's total electricity supply, wind energy about 12%, nuclear energy 11%, while natural gas-fired power plants contributed 5%.

Within just five seconds, about 60% of the electricity supply disappeared from the grid.

Spain's Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, stated that the government will investigate the incident in depth, hold private operators accountable and take measures to prevent a similar situation from recurring.

He added that, although power supply has been almost fully restored, difficulties in rail transport are still being reported.

The European Union is also closely following the incident. An EU spokesperson confirmed that the institution is carefully analyzing the causes of the outage and the lessons that can be learned to avoid similar incidents in the future in other European countries.
