Friedrich Merz becomes Chancellor of Germany

Friedrich Merz has become Germany's new chancellor, after winning a second vote in the country's parliament, following his failure in the first round earlier today.

Merz, the leader of the country's conservative CDU/CSU, has become the 10th chancellor since the end of World War II.

No previous candidate since then had managed to win on the first ballot.

Initially needing a majority of 316 out of 630 votes in a secret ballot, he received 310, failing to be elected by just 6 votes.

He was expected to win easily after securing a coalition deal with the center-left Social Democrats (SPD).

But at least 18 coalition MPs failed to support it.
