Serious incident in the Aegean. Turkish ship opens fire on Greek patrol ship

A serious incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning in Greek territorial waters, when a Turkish vessel opened fire on a Greek coast guard ship.

The incident occurred around 8 a.m. local Greek time near the island of Lesbos, when a Greek patrol ship sought to stop and inspect a suspected Turkish vessel.

Greek media reports that as the patrol boat approached the Turkish ship, it was shot at with a Kalashnikov rifle.

Under fire, Greek patrol forces returned fire, prompting the Turkish ship to retreat, first into international waters and then into Turkish territorial waters.

Greek media report that no one from the Greek crew was injured, while the Coast Guard vessel returned to port with bullet holes.

It is suspected that the Turkish ship had transported about 30 illegal immigrants to the Greek island, so the traffickers refused to submit to the control and drew their weapons and shot at the Greek coast guard vessel.
