Meta "tests" Europeans/ The company that owns Instagram and Facebook, starts training "AI" with public content

Meta, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, Threads and WhatsApp, has announced that it has begun training its artificial intelligence models using public content from its users in the European Union.
This initiative comes in the wake of the launch of "Meta AI" in Europe and aims to improve the digital assistant's interaction with the continent's diverse cultures, languages, and traditions.
According to the company's announcement, the training will include public posts and comments from adult users, while private content – such as messages – and any content from users under the age of 18 will be excluded from the process.
However, according to the company, all users have the right to refuse participation.
Starting this week, users residing in EU countries will be notified via apps and email about the potential use of their data.
These notifications will also include a special form, where each user has the opportunity to object to the inclusion of their public content in AI training.
This move comes after Meta last year suspended the use of EU content for training its models, pending regulatory clarifications.
Following a positive opinion from the European Data Protection Board in December and dialogue with the Irish Data Protection Commission, Meta is ready to proceed with this strategy.
Meta emphasizes that this training methodology is not exclusive to Europe, but a practice that has already been used in other regions of the world.
Other tech giants, such as Google and OpenAI, have followed a similar approach, using public data to improve their AI models.
With this step, Meta seeks to maintain competitiveness in the emerging field of generative AI, where the quality and diversity of data used for training are essential for building advanced and responsive models.
