Apple and Meta fined 700 million euros by the EU

The two technology giants, Apple and Meta, are forced to pay a combined 700 million euros to the European Union.

The value of 500 million Euros was issued to Apple, specifically for the App Store, while 200 million Euros was issued to Meta for the choices users had to accept regarding data collection, reports the BBC.

Apple was fined for having to offer alternative app marketplaces for users and app developers. Meta, on the other hand, was fined because users had to choose between allowing the company to combine data it had collected from Facebook and Instagram, or paying a monthly subscription.

In March last year, the European Union launched its own investigations into Apple, Meta and Google, while the latter appears to have escaped a fine. The investigation was conducted to verify whether the companies broke the rules, and whether they violated the Digital Markets Act, a project introduced in 2022.

At the same time, Apple was fined 1.8 billion euros by the European Union for violating competition laws on music streaming.
