Why Mark Zuckerberg might be forced to sell Instagram and WhatsApp?!

The company Meta, owned by Mark Zuckerberg, is facing a crucial trial in the US, which could lead to its separation from the Instagram and WhatsApp platforms.
The lawsuit began on April 14, following a six-year investigation by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which alleges that Meta violated competition laws.
According to the lawsuit, Meta used anticompetitive practices to protect its dominance in the personal social networking market. The FTC alleges that the acquisitions of Instagram in 2012 and WhatsApp in 2014 were ways to eliminate competitive threats to Facebook. The documents cite a 2008 email from Zuckerberg that said, “It’s better to buy than to compete.”
Furthermore, Meta is accused of imposing restrictive terms on developers using its platform in order to curb the growth of potential competitors. The FTC argues that this behavior has harmed users by limiting choice, quality, and innovation on the social network.
On the other hand, Meta has responded to the accusations with a public statement in which it considers the FTC's claims as weak and disconnected from reality. Jennifer Newstead, head of legal affairs at Meta, emphasized that the social media market is much more complex and includes competitors such as TikTok, YouTube, iMessage and X.
According to her, Instagram has benefited from the acquisition by Meta and offers a better experience for users. However, if Meta loses the process, Zuckerberg could be forced to sell Instagram and WhatsApp - a decision that would have major consequences for the future of the global social network.
