New York Cardinal: New Pope Will Try to 'Build Bridges' with President Trump

The new pope, Leo XIV, will seek to build bridges with all world leaders, including Donald Trump, the New York cardinal said.
"Will he want to build bridges with Donald Trump? I think so, but he will want to build bridges with the leader of every nation," said Timothy Dolan.
Pope Leo is the first American pope, and after his election, Trump posted on his Truth Social platform that it is a "great honor" for the US to have a man born in Chicago as the head of the Catholic Church.
Criticism of the Trump administration
In the past, a social media account that bore the name of Pope Leo before he became pope shared posts that were critical of the Trump administration.
He shared an opinion piece in February that criticized US Vice President JD Vance for his beliefs about certain aspects of Christian teaching.
New Pope likely to challenge US president
A British theologian thinks the 69-year-old will avoid confrontation, while also challenging the American administration.
"I think he can have this way of being a pretty disarming presence. He's gentle, he's thoughtful.
"He has almost all the opposite characteristics of Trump," said Professor Anna Rowlands.
Asked how she might approach a meeting with Trump, Rowlands said: “It’s unlikely to be confrontational, I think, because of his nature, however I think the content of what he says will be quite challenging.
