China discovers strategic mineral worth billions of euros, here's why it's a big blow to Trump

China has discovered more than 35 million tons of pure quartz in the Qinling and Altay regions of Xinjiang, a mineral essential for the production of chips, optical fibers and solar panels. This is expected to bring a strategic transformation in China's dependence on American, Norwegian and Australian imports of this material.
Pure quartz is key to producing semiconductor-grade silicon, which is used in computer chips, 5G networks, fiber optics and solar panels. Although China is the global leader in solar panel and semiconductor production, a lack of domestic reserves has made it vulnerable to supply chain disruptions – a heightened risk at a time of trade tensions with the West.
To meet this challenge, the Chinese government is establishing a national quartz innovation center, and has already included the mineral in the list of national strategic minerals. A national geological survey is also planned to assess quartz reserves and strengthen independence in natural resources.
According to Huang Xuexiong, an official at the Ministry of Natural Resources, this discovery “will positively impact the construction of new productive forces and the strengthening of the security of industrial and supply chains.” China is preparing for a new era of technological autonomy and clean energy, with pure quartz at the center of the strategy.
