British media: Prime Minister Starmer is preparing to resign! Here's who is expected to be the successor

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to resign on Monday and announce the timeline for his departure, the Observer reported on Sunday, although a government source said Starmer was still focused on his duties.
Starmer's weak position - a situation that had persisted for months - was significantly weakened on Friday when his rival Andy Burnham, the mayor of Manchester, won a seat in parliament that would allow him to run for the party leadership.
The newspaper said Starmer had concluded that his position was no longer sustainable after discussions with cabinet ministers, advisers, donors and union leaders.
She added that Starmer had discussed the issue of resigning with his wife at his country home in Chequers before making a final decision, but senior Labour Party officials expected a clear statement on his future as early as Monday.
However, a government source said Starmer remained focused on his job and pointed to previous statements he had made in this regard.
The British leader said on Friday that he would face any challenge to his leadership and urged the Labour Party not to be divided by internal strife.
Although he led the Labour Party to a landslide election victory in 2024, the prime minister has become hugely unpopular after a series of scandals and backlash that have left many voters feeling he cannot deliver the improvements to their living standards he promised.
If he resigns or is sacked, it would mean Britain would have its seventh prime minister in just over a decade - the fastest change of prime ministers in almost two centuries, reflecting anger at the failure of successive governments to improve public services and tackle issues such as illegal immigration.
More than 100 MPs elected by Starmer's party - about a quarter of all Labour Party representatives in the House of Commons - have said publicly that they want him to resign or set a deadline for his departure, according to a Reuters tally.
