Republican People's Party leader attacked in Istanbul
The leader of the Turkish Republican People's Party (CHP), Ozgur Ozel, was attacked today after leaving a rally, Turkish media reported.
Ozgur Ozel was approached by a man after a meeting at the Ataturk Cultural Center in Istanbul and punched him, the Anadolu Agency reported.
The 66-year-old suspected attacker, whose initials are listed as ST, was arrested by police.
The CHP leader left the area after the attack, escorted by security forces.
The Istanbul Public Prosecutor's Office announced that an investigation has been opened into the attack on Ozgur Ozel, that the attacker has been arrested and that the public will be informed of everything in detail.
The attack on the CHP leader was condemned by the spokesman for the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party), Omer Çelik.
"Any attack on a political institution is unacceptable. The attacker will be held accountable before the law," said Omer Celik.
