UN: 58 countries and territories contaminated by landmines

A report by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights found that at least 58 countries and territories were riddled with landmines in 2025.
“It is deeply concerning that, almost 30 years after the adoption of the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Treaty, these explosive weapons continue to kill and injure people, often decades after they were deployed,” High Commissioner Volker Türk said in a press release.
"It is necessary for all states to commit to ending the production, use and transfer of these weapons and to intensify cooperation to remove mines that have already been placed," he added.
According to this report, which is based on information from government agencies, NGOs, humanitarian organizations and civil society, at least 1,945 people were killed and 4,325 were injured by landmines and explosive remnants of war in 2024.
In its announcement today, the International Campaign to Ban Anti-Personnel Mines (ICBL) reports more than 5,000 deaths and injuries in 2025 in 40 countries. 90% of the victims are civilians.
Among the countries affected by landmines are Myanmar, Syria, Afghanistan, Ukraine, Nigeria, Mali, Yemen and Burkina Faso.
