UN extends mandate of its mission in Afghanistan

The UN Security Council has extended the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) for another year.

The draft resolution put to a vote during the meeting on Afghanistan was unanimously adopted.

The resolution states that UNAMA's mandate has been extended until March 17, 2026, without any change in its powers.

UNAMA was established in 2002 by UN Security Council Resolution 1401 and its mandate has been extended annually. UNAMA, headquartered in Kabul, has approximately 1,200 staff members.
