After the arrest of Nicolás Maduro, Venezuela closes the notorious El Helicoide prison

Venezuela's interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, announced the declaration of a general amnesty and the closure of the notorious El Helicoide detention center, a few weeks after the US operation that led to the arrest of President Nicolás Maduro.
Speaking before the Venezuelan Supreme Court, Rodríguez declared that the government will present to parliament a bill for an amnesty, which covers the period of political conflicts from 1999 to the present. According to her, the measure aims to “heal the wounds of political conflict” and restore national coexistence.
She also confirmed that El Helicoide prison, described by the opposition and human rights organizations as a center where political prisoners have been held, will be closed and transformed into a social, cultural and sports center.
Venezuelan authorities claim that over 800 political prisoners have been released. However, the non-governmental organization Foro Penal disputes this figure, reporting 383 releases and around 711 people still in prison.
