US Secretary of State Rubio calls on India and Pakistan to reduce tensions after Kashmir attack

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke to his Indian counterpart Jaishankar, according to a State Department statement. Rubio encouraged India to work with Pakistan to reduce tensions and maintain peace and security in South Asia.
Rubio also called on Pakistani officials to cooperate in the investigation into the brutal attack in Kashmir. In a phone call with the Pakistani prime minister, Rubio urged Pakistan to work with India to reduce tensions and restore communication, according to the State Department.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif received a phone call from Rubio, according to a statement from his office on Wednesday, reported by Reuters. Sharif urged Rubio to pressure New Delhi to maintain a "responsible stance" and help reduce tensions.
Earlier, the State Department had stated that Rubio was expected to communicate with his counterparts from India and Pakistan, urging them "not to escalate the situation."
Pakistan reiterated today that it considers an attack by India, which could happen within the next two days, to be imminent. “Pakistan will not strike first, but will not hesitate to respond,” warned Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi reportedly gave the military a “blank cheque” to mount its response.
India closes airspace to Pakistani aircraft
India has closed its airspace to Pakistani airlines and the Air Force, just days after Pakistan did the same to Indian airlines, amid rising tensions between the two countries over a deadly attack on tourists in Kashmir.
India's airspace will remain closed from April 30 to May 23, the government announced.
