Explosion at police station in Syria, at least 3 dead

At least three people were killed and several others were injured in an explosion that hit a police station in the town of Al-Mayadeen, in the eastern Syrian province of Deir az Zor, on Sunday.

The attack came a day after the Syrian interim government first announced a successful operation against ISIS 'sleeper cells' in the northern city of Aleppo, where three militants were killed and four others were arrested.

According to the Syrian Interior Ministry, the operation was carried out in cooperation between the General Security Department and the Intelligence Directorate, and a security officer was also killed during the intervention.

Interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa, who took power after the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad in December by an offensive led by the opposition group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, is an outspoken opponent of ISIS.

Al-Sharaa, which renounced ties with al Qaeda in 2016, has vowed to eliminate the remnants of the extremist group's once-declared caliphate.

The latest explosion in Al-Mayadeen follows a series of tense developments, including the foiling of an earlier ISIS plot near the Sayeda Zeinab shrine, a pilgrimage site for Shiite Muslims south of Damascus.
