The country in Europe where English is spoken best

The Netherlands again took first place, not only in Europe, but also in the world, and the Austrians also speak English very well, while the French are only in 34th place in Europe.
Every year, global education company Education First (EF) publishes the countries ranked best (and worst) when it comes to English in something called the English Proficiency Index (EPI). Analyzing the scores of 2.2 million adults who took EF's standardized English tests, participants from each country can score a maximum of 800 points.
Here's what the latest English proficiency scores look like across the Old Continent.
As in 2022, the Netherlands again took first place with 647 points, not only in Europe, but also in the world. Also among the first countries that can boast of "very high expertise" was Austria, which reached the 3rd place in the world (second in Europe) with 616 points.
The Nordic countries Denmark, Norway and Sweden took the next three places, followed by Belgium, Portugal, Germany.
However, some of the most popular European tourist destinations have somewhat weaker English language skills.
France fell to 43rd in the world and 34th in Europe, with 531 points, so it turns out that rumors of poor English skills in France are not just idle stories. With 535 points, Italy and Spain also fell into the "moderate ability" category, rising to 35th in the world and 32nd and 33rd in Europe.
Interestingly, they were beaten this year by Georgia and Belarus, ranked 32nd and 33rd globally.
