Trump hits China again: They are closing factories because of the tariffs we

United States representatives are in negotiations with Chinese officials with the aim of reaching a trade agreement, Donald Trump told members of his cabinet during a meeting at noon on Wednesday at the White House.

"At some point I hope to reach a deal, we are negotiating with China," Trump said, claiming that the high tariffs that Washington has imposed on Beijing are leading to the closure of factories in China.

"I just saw some reports... their economy is showing poorly. I was really upset by what I heard," he added.

The US president also stressed that he wants China's progress and has a positive attitude towards Chinese President Xi Jinping.

" I like President Xi, I wouldn't want this to happen to them, I don't want them to suffer. Ships are leaving because they refuse goods, they don't want to buy because of the tariffs. Factories are closing all over China because we don't want their products," Trump added.

The comments came after a report showed that China's industrial activity contracted at its fastest pace in 16 months this month. A senior official from China's National Bureau of Statistics said the drop in factory orders was due to "sudden changes in the external environment and other factors."

Moreover, recent cargo data shows a significant drop in shipments from China to the US, as well as some shipping vessels turning back without unloading their cargo. For example, logistics company Flexport reported that bookings from China to the US have dropped by about 60% following the imposition of 145% tariffs.
