Arrested for insulting Erdogan, Swedish journalist who went to Turkey to cover

Swedish journalist Joachim Medin, who was arrested in late March in Turkey and convicted of "insulting Turkish President" Recep Tayyip Erdogan, was released today, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced.

"He is traveling from Turkey to Sweden. He will arrive in a few hours," Kristersson said in a post on the X platform.

"Continuous work, in relative calm, has borne fruit," he added, thanking his European counterparts who "helped a lot in this process."

40-year-old Medin, who works for the Dagens ETC newspaper, was arrested on March 27 when he arrived in Istanbul to cover the protests that had begun in the previous days following the arrest of the city's mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu.

In late April, an Ankara court sentenced him to 11 months in prison, suspended for “insulting the president.” Despite the suspended sentence, Medin remained in prison, accused of “participating in a terrorist organization.”

The journalist denies the charges brought by the Turkish authorities. He was prosecuted because, according to the Turkish judiciary, he participated in a demonstration of the Kurdistan Workers' Party in Stockholm in January 2023.
