Introduced as representatives of African countries, Meloni falls

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni fell victim to a joke by two Russian comedians ahead of a United Nations General Assembly meeting in September, in which she alluded to the fatigue of the parties involved in the war in Ukraine, as she said she would soon have to a way out of the conflict.

The Italian government confirmed that Meloni was the victim of a 'bogus' phone call by Vladimir Kuznetsov and Alexey Stolyarov, one of whom posed as the president of the African Union Commission.

During the telephone conversation, Meloni noted, among other things, that "there is a lot of fatigue on all sides" about the conflict in Ukraine and "the time is approaching when everyone will understand that we need a way out."

"I have some ideas on how to handle this situation," Meloni added, "but I'm waiting for the right moment to put them on the table."

The episode occurred on September 18 in the context of Prime Minister Meloni's intensive efforts at that time to strengthen relations with African leaders with whom she had important meetings at the UN General Assembly proceedings on September 19 and 21.
