What happens to our bodies when we sit for long hours?

When we sit for long hours, our bodies can't wait to move again. This may sound absurd, since, theoretically, our bodies crave relaxation and rest, but this is the reality.

A short break is certainly necessary to recover from fatigue. But today we sit more than we should.

See below what happens to your body when you sit for long hours:

Can cause sleep apnea

When you sit for hours, gravity and decreased blood circulation can cause fluid to accumulate in your lower extremities. So when you later lie down to sleep, that fluid transfers to the muscles and tissues of your neck and can cause swelling, according to scientists at the Centre for Sleep Medicine and Circadian Biology at the University of Toronto.

This makes it difficult for you to breathe air and can even cause you to stop breathing for short periods during the night, causing sleep apnea.

Women who lead a sedentary lifestyle have more than double the risk of developing pulmonary embolism, a blood clot in the lungs. This is because sitting for long periods of time reduces blood flow and increases the chances of blood clots forming, which can end up in the lungs.

According to a relevant study published in the journal Mental and Physical Activity, a sedentary lifestyle increases the chances of developing negative emotional states, such as anxiety and even depression.

Back and neck problems

It is one of the most common problems caused by a sedentary lifestyle. And those that appear immediately, like back pain when you sit in a chair for many hours without getting up.

Also, most people have poor posture, especially when working in front of a screen, which gradually leads to neck problems.
