Hollywood celebrates its first century of creation with a new look

With a new look now, HOLLYWOOD celebrates its first century of creation. In fact, it's 100 years since the iconic sign first appeared illuminated by 3,700 bulbs on Griffith Park Hill overlooking Cinema City.

This word, in view of the anniversary, was cleaned and restored.

The operation of the " Sherwin-Williams " company was followed minute by minute for weeks on the website Hollywoodsign.org through a video camera that was active 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

" The sign is the pride of Los Angeles and we are happy that fans around the world will be able to see the new look for the 100th birthday ," said Jeff Zarrinnam, president of the Hollywood Sign Trust .

The lettering has dominated the hill since late 1923, though the writing originally read Hollywoodland, in a reference not to the dream industry but to what was then Southern California's economic engine, new home construction.

In fact, it was Harry Chandler, a real estate entrepreneur who also owned the Los Angeles Times , who erected them in plain sight to advertise the building land he owned underneath.

The last time the letters were restored was 10 years before final contact, on the occasion of their 90th anniversary.

The writing, which cost $21,000, was originally intended to stand for only 18 months, but it didn't.

In 1978 the letters were dismantled and completely rebuilt.

The old ones ended up in the hands of Hugh Hefner, who that year auctioned them off for charity for about $35,000 each.

There were nine left after Hollywoodland was shortened to Hollywood, back in 1949.
