This is why Coco Chanel never married

Coco Chanel epitomizes the mid-20th century successful woman who was married to her career and never had time to have a family – the kind of woman who was considered a "cautionary tale in the 50s".

However, by the 70s, Chanel was seen more as an inspiration and, quite often, a feminist icon. As Alice Litscher, professor of communication at the Institut Français de la Mode in Paris, told The Guardian, Chanel's "atypical" single status "meant a radical rethinking of [her] relationship with the male sex."

However, while there is some truth behind the claim that "the profession kept her single", the real story behind her lifestyle is much more complicated than that. Perhaps the most important thing to understand about Chanel's motivation to succeed is the fact that she was born into abject poverty.

Chanel was the daughter of a laundry worker and a street vendor. Orphaned at 12, Chanel was all alone in the middle of the world and aware that she would have to fend for herself for the rest of her life.

After all, even a successful marriage was highly unlikely for a girl with such an unfortunate background. All Chanel had to go on was desire, ambition and determination to use everything to make her way in the world of fashion.

After Coco Chanel's dangerous relationship with Hans Gunther von Dincklage, the designer and all her subsequent lovers were not on her level. (After dating a Nazi, maybe it's time to put on the black dress and chill out like “une femme à chat.”)

But this was not the case with Chanel. After keeping the fashion house closed for nearly 10 years after the war – which was not only reasonable, but necessary, seeing that collaborators like Chanel were so out of favor – she reopened it in 1954, aged 71. year.

While the French media were still unwilling to embrace her return to high fashion, Americans and Brits alike embraced Chanel's chic new suit. So much so, in fact, that it's still considered a classic, nearly 70 years later.
