Study: How often married couples should have sex

If you are married but not completely satisfied with your sex life at the moment, it is reasonable to ask yourself what is the normal number of sexual contacts with your partner.

Average number of times per week married couples have sex

According to data from 660 married people from the 2018 General Social Survey who shared details about how often they had sex in the past year:

-25% had sex once a week

-16% had sex two to three times a week

-5% had sex four or more times a week

-17% had sex once a month

-19% had sex two to three times a month

-10% had not had sex last year

-7% had sex once or twice in the past year

-10% have not had sex in the last 12 months.

Other studies have come up with similar figures, with a long-term study of 35,000 Britons published in 2019 claiming that around half of people in a serious relationship have sex less than once a week.

How often married couples have sex by age

In a 2013 study of more than 8,000 people over 50 by sociologists Pepper Schëartz and James Witte, it was found that 31% of couples had sex several times a week, 28% had sex several times a month, 8% once per month and 33% had sex rarely or not at all.

Another study of people in their eighth decade of life, published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior, found that 33% of sexually active men and 36% of sexually active women had sex at least twice a month. Therefore, for those in the ninth decade of life, the percentages ranged from 19% for men and 32% for women. According to a 2010 survey by the Kinsey Institute, 25% of women over 70 who had a romantic partner had sex more than four times a week.

"All aspects of our sexuality change as we grow. Arousal and orgasm may last longer, desire may decrease, and sexual frequency may certainly decrease, especially as the relationship matures over the years. Of course, this is not absolute for everyone, but it is the most common phenomenon", explains psychologist Lauren Fogel Mersy.

How often should they have sex?

There is no ideal number of times every married couple should have sex, as everyone's needs and desires vary according to their personal beliefs.

The frequency at which a couple 'should' have contact is what they both agree on based on their personal needs and desire levels. “I would hesitate to suggest a specific number as there is not a good ratio for the whole population. When people use statistics to determine sexual frequency, they reinforce the so-called 'sex effect', which is only about meeting social demands and not about actual desire," emphasizes Dr. Fogel Mercy.

However, a recent study published in Social Psychological and Personality Science found that couples are happier when they have sex about twice a week. It should be noted that, at least according to these findings, relationship happiness decreased when relationships occurred less frequently, but did not increase when relationships occurred more frequently.
