French sailor survives 16 hours on an overturned boat in the Atlantic

A 62-year-old French man survived for 16 hours at sea using an air bubble inside his boat after it capsized. The 12-metre-long ship, which had set sail from Portugal's capital Lisbon, sent out an alarm signal on Monday evening from the Atlantic Ocean.

The Spanish coast guard found the overturned boat, but the sea was too rough to salvage it so the sailor had to wait until morning. His survival was "on the verge of impossibility," coast guard divers said.

His boat sent out a distress signal at 9.23pm local time on Monday from the Sisargas Islands, off Spain's northwestern Galicia region. A rescue boat with five divers as well as three helicopters was launched to find and rescue the 62-year-old, whose name has not yet been released.

The next day, 2 divers swam under the boat to help the sailor, who was found wearing a survival suit and submerged up to his knees in water.

The man then jumped into the freezing water and swam under the boat to the surface of the sea. In a tweet, Spain's Maritime Safety and Rescue Association said:

"Every life saved is our greatest reward."

Vicente Cobelo, a member of the coastguard's special operations team, said the sailor entered the water "on his own initiative". He was airlifted by the rescue team and briefly taken to the hospital for checks.
