Experts sound the alarm: Inflation is impoverishing citizens and hitting

Experts in economic issues have assessed that high inflation is hitting the standard of living and worsening the position of businesses in Kosovo.

According to them, rising prices are reducing citizens' purchasing power, while the lack of productive investment and political instability are hindering the country's long-term economic development.

The former president of the Kosovo Chamber of Commerce, Safet Gërxhaliu, has said that alarms about inflation and economic problems are being overshadowed by the political crisis and debate over power.

"What is worrying is the fact that recommendations coming from local experts or international institutions that do not favor daily politics are either silenced or rejected without arguments. In this regard, regarding the negative effect of inflation rising to 7.5% in 2026, we have raised the alarm that it is truly a worrying situation," he told EO.

He added that international reports have also raised concerns about corruption, political hiring, and media freedom.

"It is not only the problem of inflation that has come as an alarm from the European Union. There have been three reports dealing with political hiring, attacks and the lack of media freedom, but above all, on corruption and tenderomania that has become a cancerous disease of Kosovo."

"Therefore, it is truly time for Kosovo to have political stability as soon as possible. Political stability is difficult to achieve with this political mentality, because in Kosovo, elections are not won to govern, but to rule," said Gërxhaliu.

Even economic expert Ismet Mulaj has assessed that rising inflation is impoverishing citizens and negatively affecting businesses.

"Of course this impoverishes citizens. It impoverishes citizens, of course it impoverishes businesses too, because citizens consume less, buy less. Or, citizens do not, do not invest. As long as they do not invest, that is, for all that financial contingent that they have and save for consumption because, how to say, because they are basic needs, then business is discouraged. Of course there are businesses today, the largest investments that Kosovars make in capital investments are in Albania. Around 600 to 700 million euros have been invested by Kosovo Albanians in Albania," Mulaj told EO.

He said that Kosovo should focus on major development projects that would boost investment and economic growth.

According to the Kosovo Agency of Statistics, in April 2026, Kosovo recorded the highest inflation rate in the last three years, reaching 7.5 percent, while in May inflation was recorded at 6.8 percent.

According to data, the inflation rate in Kosovo remains significantly higher than the European Union average, which is around 3.2 percent./Dukagjini
