30 seconds before the powerful tremors in Venezuela, how Androids warned of strong earthquakes, the notification that thousands of citizens received

It may seem impossible, but it's true! The two powerful earthquakes that occurred Wednesday evening, one after the other within 39 seconds of each other in Venezuela, were warned by Android phones.

The news has also been confirmed by a Google employee, who in a statement given to Hindustan Times revealed how the company's Android Earthquake Alert System detected the initial seismic activity in Venezuela.

According to the Google official, it is learned that Android relies primarily on two detection methods: in California, Oregon, and Washington, Google collaborated with the American ShakeAlert system, which uses a network of 1,675 ground sensors to determine the location and magnitude of an earthquake before transmitting a signal to Android.

Elsewhere, the system is said to be based on multiple sources. Every smartphone reportedly has a small accelerometer that can sense vibrations. When a phone detects movement that could indicate an earthquake, it immediately sends a signal, along with an approximate location, to Google's detection server.

The notification received by citizens using Android: 

The server collects data from many phones to confirm whether an earthquake is occurring, effectively turning millions of Android devices around the world into a giant network of makeshift seismometers.

It is reported that the warning issued by Android occurs mainly when it comes to earthquakes with a magnitude of 4.5 or greater.

So in this specific case, since both consecutive earthquakes were more than 7 on the Richter scale, Samsung cell phones circulated moments before the earthquake occurred, signaling that the country was about to "shake."

Meanwhile, so far it is learned that the number of people who have lost their lives from the two powerful earthquakes in succession has reached 235. While around 4,300 people are said to have been injured, over 10,000 individuals are thought to be missing, for whom searches for their remains continue.
