British journalist for the well-known Channel4 television network, Lindsey Hilsum, has conducted an interview with Edi Rama, while today marks 60 days of protests against the Albanian prime minister. In this interview, the journalist 'crucifies' Rama, after the latter tells her that there is no project for the Zvërnec area. The journalist says that she has seen the project.
Embarrassed, Edi Rama openly lied when he said that the bulldozers were sent to open the road for the residents of the area. But the journalist adds that the residents of the area had the road open, however, a fence was put up for them after the bulldozers left.
Below is the interview:
Lindsey Hilsum: Protesters have been out every night for almost 60 days. How does it feel to have protesters in front of your office night after night?
Edi Rama: It's something wonderful for the country, for society, because right on this boulevard, not long ago, about 15 years ago, people were killed with real bullets while peacefully protesting. I've reflected a lot on this protest. And I've come to the conclusion that for people it's not about the facts, and rightly so, but about the higher expectations that bring them out on the streets. And that's okay.
Lindsey Hilsum: So it's not a bad thing?
Edi Rama: It's fantastic. That's why I said it's fantastic. I understand them.
Lindsey Hilsum: Have these protests made you reconsider any of your policies?
Edi Rama: What policies?
Lindsey Hilsum: The policies related to the project in Sazan and Zvërnec, where this whole story started, because of the endangerment of the flamingo habitat and other habitats there.
Edi Rama: No. No project has been launched.
Lindsey Hilsum: But I've seen it.
Edi Rama: No.
Lindsey Hilsum: So what did I see? Shouldn't I trust my eyes?
Edi Rama: I'll tell you what you saw. But no project has been launched. And, to start with Sazan, which you included in your question, there is neither a project nor an agreement in Sazan. Including Sazan in this discussion is completely unnecessary, because we still have nothing in Sazan.
Lindsey Hilsum: But Mr. Kushner and Mrs. Trump have linked the two projects together, right? They said the two projects are linked.
Edi Rama: Yes, the idea is related...
Lindsey Hilsum: Then explain it to me, because I went to Zvërnec and saw the place where the project had started...
Edi Rama: No project has started in Zvërnec.
Lindsey Hilsum: Atëherë çfarë pashë? Gardhet dhe të gjitha ato?
Edi Rama: Po ju shpjegoj. Nuk është fillimi i projektit. Janë vetëm përgatitjet për të kryer punët paraprake përpara se të jepet leja, e cila do të bazohet në vlerësimin e ndikimit në mjedis, studimet gjeologjike, hidrologjike e të tjera.
Lindsey Hilsum: Por zakonisht vlerësimi mjedisor bëhet përpara se të futen buldozerët, sepse buldozerët mund të dëmtojnë mjedisin. Normalisht dërgohen disa shkencëtarë që ta studiojnë zonën.
Edi Rama: Buldozerët janë përdorur për të hapur rrugën për komunitetin, në mënyrë që njerëzit të mund të kalojnë përmes pronës private dhe të mos pengohen të lëvizin. Nuk...
Lindsey Hilsum: Por njerëzit kalonin edhe më parë në atë rrugë me rërë. Nuk ishin të bllokuar më parë. U bllokuan më pas, sepse u vendos gardhi.
Edi Rama: E kuptoj. Tani, nëse doni faktet, unë po jua them faktet.
Lindsey Hilsum: Zoti Kushner ka thënë se ju ishit në jaht me ta kur zbuluan ishullin në vitin 2020.
Edi Rama: U ftova të bashkohesha me disa persona në një jaht që ndaloi në Shqipëri për t'u furnizuar me karburant, rrugës për në Mal të Zi.
Lindsey Hilsum: Ishte jahti i Nat Rothschild.
Edi Rama: Po. U ftova dhe shkova. Atje takova Jaredin dhe Ivankën. Nuk e di nëse kishin dëgjuar më parë për Shqipërinë, por mund të them me siguri se nuk kishin ndonjë interes konkret për Shqipërinë. Ata ishin shumë të interesuar për historinë dhe vendin ku ndodheshin. Kjo është pika e parë. Pika e dytë: disa muaj më vonë, në Davos, takova Jaredin dhe ai më shprehu interesin për të eksploruar mundësinë e investimit. Natyrisht që unë i thashë "po". Si mund t'i thosha "jo"? I thashë "po". Për mua kjo është gjëja më normale. Ky do të jetë një nga zhvillimet më të jashtëzakonshme që do t'i ndodhin Evropës pas shumë kohësh. Kohët e fundit nuk kanë ndodhur shumë gjëra të jashtëzakonshme në Evropë.
Lindsey Hilsum: Pse është kaq e jashtëzakonshme?
Edi Rama: Sepse nuk do të jetë ajo që njerëzit e imagjinojnë gabimisht. Dhe as ajo që ju e imagjinoni gabimisht.
Lindsey Hilsum: Unë nuk po imagjinoj. Kam parë atë që Jared Kushner publikoi në Instagram dhe disa nga planet e projektit. E kuptoj që ato nuk janë planet përfundimtare.
Edi Rama: Ajo që u publikua në Instagram ishte vetëm një prezantim paraprak. Projekti ka evoluar. Tani janë përfshirë arkitektë të nivelit më të lartë dhe projektues peizazhi të njohur për punën e tyre në zonat ligatinore. Në të njëjtën kohë, ne po bëjmë në mënyrë të pavarur vlerësimin e ndikimit në mjedis. Pra, projekti nuk synon ta shkatërrojë atë vend të bukur. Synon ta rigjenerojë.
Lindsey Hilsum: The European Commission has expressed concern. Albania's membership in the European Union is very important to you. The Commission is concerned about environmental laws and the 2024 changes that create a kind of exemption for strategic investments. Do you think you can review this?
Edi Rama: Listen. It is very good that the Commission is concerned. It cannot be otherwise. And, by the way, we are negotiating to become members of the European Union. Therefore, the very idea that we can move forward with a project, or any project, that does not comply with European standards is absurd. I am just saying this: for this project, calm down, speak with facts, comment on the facts and look at the facts. Don't get too excited by saying that everything is catastrophic.
Lindsey Hilsum: It sounds like you've been personally affected by these allegations.
Edi Rama: No, no, I'm not hurt.
Lindsey Hilsum: It seems like you take it very personally though.
Edi Rama: Listen. Everything is personal. Anyone who does their job with passion experiences it personally. But I am not hurt. In fact, this has helped me. As I told you before, for me the June protests – not this one – have been both a confirmation that the country has reached another level and, on the other hand, a very clear mirror to see what we need to reflect on.
