The number of people facing hunger in the world is increasing

The number of people affected by hunger in the world rose to 828 million in 2021, an increase of 46 million compared to 2020, and by 150 million since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.

This is stated in the new report of the United Nations which provides new data that the world is moving away from achieving the goal of ending hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition by 2030.

The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) report presents data on the food security and nutrition situation around the world, including the latest estimates of the cost and affordability of a healthy diet.

The report was published by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, the International Fund for Agricultural Development, the UN Children's Fund, the World Food Program and the World Health Organization.

The report states that 8.9 percent of the world's population faced hunger in 2021, while this figure in 2020 was 9.3 percent.

The organizations that published the report said that this document is being published at a time when the war between Russia and Ukraine, two of the largest producers of grain and artificial fertilizers, continues. The blockades caused by the war have interrupted world supplies and are affecting the increase in the prices of food, grains, artificial fertilizers, energy, but also therapeutic foods for children.

"This report highlights the intensification of these food insecurities and malnutrition: conflict, climate extremes and economic shocks, combined with growing inequalities," said the joint statement of the UN agencies that contributed to the report./REL/
