Bird flu outbreak in Brazil, Kosovo bans chicken imports

The Food and Veterinary Agency has notified the citizens of Kosovo that starting from May 20, 2025, it is temporarily banning the import of chicken meat and other poultry products from Brazil.
The announcement states that this measure was taken in response to an outbreak of H5N1 bird flu on a commercial farm in the state of Rio Grande, Brazil, confirmed on May 16, 2025 by Brazilian authorities.
" This decision aims to protect public health and prevent the possible spread of the disease in the territory of Kosovo."
"Avian influenza is a highly contagious viral disease that affects birds and, in rare cases, can be transmitted to humans. Although there is no evidence that consuming poultry meat or eggs can cause infection, the import ban is a precautionary measure to ensure the food safety of citizens ," the announcement said.
The AUVA announces that this decision is in line with international practices and actions taken by other countries, including the EU, China and other states, which have suspended imports of chicken meat from Brazil, following confirmation of the outbreak.
