Monkey 'Mafia'

Stealing something and returning it just for a reward seems to work well for the family of Macaques (a type of monkey) living around an ancient temple in Bali.
They trade goods stolen from tourists for food and fruit, a trade they learn by observing their own kind.
The macaques living around the Indonesian temple have been able to build a profitable scam over time at the expense of tourists.
They steal hats, cameras, sunglasses and anything they can easily get their hands on and expect food offerings from temple staff to return the stolen goods.
The behavior of the macaques of this temple was first and systematically studied by Fany Brotcorne, a primatologist at the University of Liège (Belgium).
After four months of observations of four different groups of monkeys living around the area, the scientist realized that the two groups closest to the temple were the ones where the thefts were concentrated: proof that the behavior is learned and transmitted between individuals as a form of cultural knowledge.
Interestingly, this form of blackmail has not been observed in other macaque groups around the world.
And when a new herd comes to live nearby, she in turn is "initiated" into extortion.
The observations will serve to extract new data on the psychology of these primates and on the origin of the behavior of exchange and negotiation, for which only man is the master./ Alfapress.al
