It may sound out of this world, but it is completely true, there is a place here on earth that surpasses all expectations. In the small settlement called Longyearbyen in central Svalbard, Norway, there are some very special laws followed by its 2,000 residents.
This settlement is known as the closest city to the North Pole, so in the winter period the night can last up to 4 months.
Apart from being a dark and cold place, this small town began to attract many tourists, not only for its fascinating history, but also for its importance for the future of humanity.
History of the settlement
Longyearbyen was established as a settlement for people who worked in the coal mine, which at the time was one of the largest coal mines in Scandinavia.
In the 90s when the mine was exhausted, the workers did not leave, but settled there creating this small town.
For all these reasons, the residents of this area have had to implement some harsh laws that may not make sense to foreigners, but for them, they are the only way they have had to survive.
